SYNOPSIS OF MOVIE: A car crashes at
the village limits of Hainesville. It is raining and the kids in the
crashed car jump out and decide to dance making a mess in the muddy
ground. Meanwhile back in the village a teenage boy and girl (Mike and
Nancy) are busy making out on the couch as the dog Wolfe sits by
watching the two smooch. Nancy's little brother Genius, who is a young
brillient scientist of about 8 years old walks in to bother them only
to be told to go away. A moment later the room shakes from an
explosion. Mike, Nancy and Wolfe quickly run into the next room to see
Geinus covered in a mess of liquids due to an experiment gone wrong.
Nancy and Genius go to clean up while Mike notices that something weird
has formed in the beaker that Genius was working with. A weird pink
goopy substance starts to form with Genius having no idea what it can
be. Before they go deeper into that they get distracted by Genius
showing them all his new security alarm device. While they are all
looking away, a stray orange cat hops in through a window and starts to
eat the goo in the beaker. Mike turns around seeing the cat helping
himself to a snack and tells him to beat it, causing the cat to run to
the other side of the room. The rest go back to cleaning up but Mike
suddenly looks back in horror seeing something that can't possibly be
there now. The same cat Mike scared off has now grown to massive
proportions and looks less then pleased as he lets out loud meows and
waves a paw down at them. After a very scary encounter with the huge
beast , the brave dog chases the giant out of the room before any harm
was done. They realize that the "goo" as Geinus calls it, caused the
growth to occur as the cat was eating it only moments before. To test
this theory Mike takes a small sample outside and feeds it to a pair of
ducks. Sure enough both ducks become giant sized in mere moments.
Suddenly all three of them realize how great an invention this is. They
can help out man kind with giant sized cattle or livestock that would
feed millions. They head inside to see if Geinus can remember how he
came up with the formula. Wolfe though helps himself to the sample of
goo left on the ground as they all head back inside. As the trio are
talking about all the great things they can do with the goo, Wolfe
barks to be let in. Genius opens the door to his lab only to see a
gigantic Wolfe standing outside of the door. Wolfe barks down at them
and sits in the doorway unable to get in as Nancy looks outside to see
the ducks have flown off.
The gang of 6 teenagers meanwhile has taken over an old school auditorium and are planning to join the rest of the village for some fun and dancing as they put on make up and play with the school props left there. Meanwhile, at the local hang out, a band performs as many teenagers dance and have a great time. The gang of teenagers show up at the hang out and start to dance with everyone else. But they aren't the only ones who have joined in. Suddenly the two giant ducks show up and start to dance on the dancefloor catching the attention of everywhere there who can't believe what they are seeing. Mike walks in telling everyone that they created those giant ducks and they have a formula which did it. The 6 teenagers meanwhile want to get a hold of that formula feeling that Mike isn't worthy of it but Mike and Nancy aren't interested in hearing what this gang has to say even as they try and make moves on each of them. The ducks suddenly walk out of the room as Mike and Nancy wave them outside through the exit.
Genius back in the lab starts to work on how to make more of the goo, while a now huge Wolfe watches on with intrest. He is unable to come up with anything but makes more of a mess as he shrugs to Wolfe and goes back to work. The gang decides to use their sex appeal to make the moves on the kids. The leader of the gang, Fred puts the moves on Nancy taking her to a private table while his girlfriend tries to sweet talk Mike. Both fail miserably as Mike and Nancy leave and the gang is left to coming up with other plans.
A barbeque is held in the town with the huge ducks as the main course who have been killed and cooked for the luncheon. Genius, Mike and Nancy head back to the house and lock the goo up into a cabinet so no one will try and take it. After locking up the goo they are met by a gigantic spider that must have eaten the formula while they were away. Mike tries to fight it off with a pitchfork but that doesn't work well. He grabs a water pipe above him sending water splashing down to the ground and he electrifies the water killing the spider instantly. They head back out to join the festivities and the gang uses that time to sneak in to get the goo. After one of the kids gets the goo he accidently sets off the burglar alarm that Genius was talking about ealier and huge sirens and rockets go off attracking the whole town to quickly come. Mike sees the kids have the formula and they refuse to give it back. They get into a huge fight with one of the gang teenagers sneaking off with the goo while everyone is still fighting.
Mike and his friends recooperate from the fight back at his house while the group of 6 head back to the auditorium and start to look over the goo they have stolen. Not sure what to do with it one of them dares the other to eat it. At first they all scoff at the idea but then before they know it its being cut up into 6 pieces for each of them to have. They all take the goo at the same times and start to grow in size becoming 35 foot giants and giantesses with no clothing on. Having to use the stage props around them they make new clothing to fit their new sizes.
Later that night at the village square the giants make themselves known and start to dance in front of everyone just wanting to have fun and show em all what they have become. One of the girls gives one of Mike's friends a hug against her breast while she dances and the rest of the town looks on in horror at the new situation. Mike doesn't like seeing his friend abused by the giantess as she dances with him captive to her chest and tries to stop them only to be met with a huge hand by Fred sending him flying into the bushes. The giants then start to tell everyone that there are going to be some new rules now and that they will be in charge. The kids don't like the way this is going and don't really want to go along with this. A sherif shows up and is shocked by what he sees and tells the 6 giants to head out of there this instant. The giants playing it cool nod and head off with no resistance back to the school auditorium. The sherif shows up with Mike and they enter the auditorium and tell the giants they want them to leave within an hour or they will have to face a huge shotgun. Fred has taken a liking to the village and has other plans and shows the sherifs daughter in one of the giantesses hands suddenly making him change his mind. They all agree to do exactly what they say and walk out to do the chores of the giants.
Genius is still having no luck coming up with more of the Goo as Wolfe continues to look on at the latest failed attempt. All the citizens of the town have to give up all their firearms as a giantess watches that they do so and the other teenagers have to bring food for the giants. The teenagers decide that they have to do something and decide to go after Fred. They all get onto motorcycles and small cars trying to take him down. They are able to nearly get him by roping around his legs making him fall only to be saved by one of his fellow giants just in time. The good guys head back to Mike's house telling him that they need him to come up with Ether to knock out one of the giantesses. They send in a girl to distract the giants while Mike and crew use a giant cottonswab full of Ether to know the one watching the sherif's daughter out cold. While they do this Mike leads the other 5 outside by using a sling to fire rocks at Fred as the other 4 watch on behind him. Fred throws a huge pole down at him missing Mike everytime. The Ether takes effect on the giantess watching the young girl and Mike's friends rescue her.
Back in the lab Genius is about to give up. Wolfe takes a sniff of the new substance Genius has come up with much to Genius' telling him not to do that. Wolfe suddenly starts to shrink back to normal size instantly returning to his previously unaltered state.Genius realizes he has the antidote and quickly heads outside to use it. He sprays the antidote steam all over the area in front of the giants and the giants shrink back down to normal size and are quickly chased out of the village by the angry group around them. They run out as fast as they can only to be stopped by a bunch of dwarfs who ask them if they are coming from the village that has the goo. They tell them that it is and the group of short people walk by headed that way as Fred and his gang walk off past their wrecked car saying they have a long walk ahead of them.
REVIEW OF MOVIE: A typical movie from the
mid 60's which was an attempt to do a teen explotation flick. It pulls
it off well enough if you can get by the bad music and sub par special
effects and thoughtless story. The movie is based on H.G. Wells' "Food
of the Gods" But it is a very loose connection. Besides the fact that
it is something that is eaten that causes the growth there is very
little connection to the story it claims to be based on.
As far as a macro
movie goes, it's not to bad. It has a
good mix of both human and animal giants as well as a lot of humor but
the story and effects are so poor, it's hard to take anything in this
movie really seriously. Even what they are trying to accomplish with it
is a bit of a mystery. A lot of things were done poorly and a lot of
things seemed bizarre. No one ever really found any of the giant
animals or humans appearing strange. As if they all realized something
like this was possible to happen. The only time anyone ever reacted was
when the cat and spider were giant before our heroes and even then they
handled it matter of factly and just went on as if everything was
business as usual. When the sherif shows up he too seemed quite calm
and not that surprised that he was standing before 6 giants. It was a
very weird feeling when watching this movie as the people in it lived
in some reality that just isn't logical. At least movies try to make
for the situations that go on to fit into how real life would deal with
it, but here they just handled it as if it was just another day in
Hainesville. When Wolfe walks to the door as a giant, it's almost
supposed to be comic relief Just no one in this town ever
reacted realisticly to anything, it's as if the movie wasn't even
caring of such facts and was more intersted in showing the dancing and
rebeling teen themes rather then using the giant themes that were being
developed all throughout in various ways. Even when the cat exited the
room in his giant size they almost just shrug as if it's all over with
already focusing on what to do with the formula next. Umm hello guys...
you just let a cat of massive proportions walk out of your house
to do as he wants? Isn't anyone going to do something?
There are lots of
problems overall with the movie and
even for when it was made they should know better. There was lots of
size fluxuation all throughout. The human and animal's being differnet
sizes at differnet moments in the same scenes, sometimes zooming close
in to faces to make them seem bigger and other times keeping the giant
animals in a locked place to make them look like they are big. Even the
human giants were done very poorly. They would talk slowly and walk as
if underwater the whole time to give the effect of being giants but it
was so weirdly done it's hard to take it seriously. We have them living
in an abandoned auditorium in the village but how they get in and out
of the small doors is a mystery as they never show that. They just
either appear inside or outside suddenly with no explanation of how
they were able to enter and leave such a small building. We have
a pair of wooden legs in another scene that is supposed to be Fred's
legs but look quite fake. We have people showing up suddenly out of no
where and people disapearing just as fast. It was just jumbled and
poorly put together. Also the animals didn't have any growth moments.
They had an off camera growth thing with them where they would be seen
eating the formula and then they would show either Wolfe or the others
reaction as they grew before them and then we would zoom back to a now
huge beast before them. The giant humans had an interseting growth
moment but even that seemed weird as the scale seemed totaly wrong for
them to just be able to grab some stage props to make for proper
clothing for what their size was supposed to be. The only size moment
that was probably done right is when Wolfe sniffs the antidote on the
table and shrinks back down to his regular size. That they actualy show
but the way they did that too looks fake as if it's a picture of Wolfe
on top of another moment as the colors don't match up properly. A good
effort but you should have tried something with the growth rather then
them shrinking down, the ol 'someone looking at the growth as it
happens' gag got old after a few times.
It's a B movie through and through but not the worst and it is watchable for its humor and macro moments. It isn't the best macro movie out there but it is far from the worst. There is a good mix of many things that get big here and it actualy is fun if you don't take the whole movie and situation seriously, which the actors in this most certainly do not. A movie like this would work very well now a days if the script was redone a bit and we used some of the special effects available to us today. Back then they worked with the budget and tools they had and while it's not a great movie effects wise it pulls off what it can with what it had to work with. It's not every movie you get to see a giant cat, dog and pair of ducks grow to giant size and still be able to walk out through an exit door (which happend with all three animals). The movie is full of many stars who would go onto much bigger things later on. (Ron Howard as the 8 year old Genius, Beau Bridges as Fred and Tommy Kirk as Mike) Bert I Gordon who directed this has been known to do various giant flicks back in this time including The Amazing Collosal Man and King Dinosaur as well a version of Food of the Gods which this movie was supposed to be based on) his initials spell out to B.I.G. ironicly enough. But this was really the best of his non human macro movies and he never really went on to do many more macro themed movies after this one as that craze sorta fazed out after the 60s ended anyway.
Overall definitely check it out if you want something differnet macrowise. Watching a huge gorilla or repitle may get dull for some and this gives other varitety for those who like to see other animals big too. Just realize when this was made and how bad the effects are and you won't see any of the giants outside unless it's the human moments or when the ducks first grew and even those are done pretty poorly due to bad special effects. If you want to see giant animals looming over humans indoors then this will do for that. If your expectations aren't to high you won't find to many problems with this enjoyable little blast from the past. The weirdest part is that there is no damage done to anything and no destruction of any sort, guess it wasn't in the buget to use logic as there is no way any of the giants in this , animal or human could have moved about and entered and exited the various places without something being destroyed for them to get through. The only sad part is that the only fatality to report in this movie was that of the giant ducks who wind up becoming lunch at a barbeque. I guess it's better to be big then not big at all, even if it leads to you being lunch is the moral to take there. Another weird thing to note is as mentioned above the giant cat exited out of the room never seen again, so by the logic of this film there is a giant cat still stomping about the village somewhere as they never used the antidote on him. Funny how no one notices anything in that village.

FINAL NOTES:
*This Movie is probably best known as being one of the movies
they used in an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Unfortunatly
this episode never made it to the MST3K DVD sets due to copywrite laws
but who knows, one day it may. Watching this movie regular and watching
it MST3K style are very differnet experiences but both amusing.
*This movie was made by Bert I
Gordon, who's initials strangely enough spell out the word "BIG". It is
also strange that Gordon has gone on to do other macro themed movies
besides this one. Including a movie called "Food of the Gods" that this
movie claims to be based on the book of. Other macro themed movies done
by Gordon include "King Dinosaur", "War of the Colossal Beasts" and
"The Amazing Colossal Man".
Errors--
Factual -- There is no way that the giants could have exited and entered the auditorium that they set up for their base in Hainesville without either breaking an area big enough or through the roof. There was no damage done to the building in any way and it was never shown how they exited and entered the place.
Factual -- The clothing the giants are wearing also wound up shrinking in size , while they were a little big to fit the humans after they shrunk down they were way to small to have fit former 50 foot giants previously.
Factual -- The giant cat walks right out of the exit to
the room he was in
but it is impossible for him to have been able to turn or even to exit
without going through the wall as the door he exited out of is very
close to a wall. It is also impossible for Wolfe to have been able to
get back inside using the same door that the kids headed back into the
house through as he too winds up at the exit the cat used clearly
showing a wall directly behind him giving him no room to have been able
to be there.
Continuity -- The giant animal sizes would fluxuate often making it confusing as to how big they were. At one moment the cat would come level to the humans while he was standing before them another he is towering over them as he exits the room walking out. This would go on often with every giant animal and human in the movie.
Special Effects -- When the ducks are dancing in the hang out you can see the strings being used to make them dance about against their will.
+ Cool to see a giant cat and dog in a real life movie as it's a rare choice for macro beast. It's an over all funny and enjoyable movie even if it's not enjoyable for the reasons it was meant to be.
- Poor special effects and story make it hard to watch or take seriously at points. Bad music throughout and is a very dated movie that was made to shock but now comes off as tame in comparison to today's standards. No logic used with lots of things done very poorly that could have been done much better with a little effort and time put into it.
