SYNOPSIS OF MOVIE: Mystery Inc (Fred, Velma, Daphne,
Shaggy and Scooby Doo) are all on the latest case. A phantom is
terrorizing a toy factory and it's up to Scooby Doo, the talking dog
hero of the movie and his human friends to put a stop to it. After a
frantic chase around the factory and by some sheer luck, the gang
knocks the phantom out cold. As the media and beautiful women show up
to congratulate Fred, he takes all the credit leaving the others to
watch him get all the glory as they stand behind and watch. When the
all go outside they get into an argument and decide to quit Mystery Inc
for good as their personalities seem to clash with one another and they
feel it is for the best. Shaggy tries his best to keep the team
together but it is no good. They all walk off in different directions
leaving Shaggy and Scooby by themselves. Shaggy and Scooby drive
off in the Mystery Van heading off into the distance.
Two years time passes and Scooby and Shaggy are busy eating eggplant
burgers in the van only to be disturbed by a knocking on the van door.
They open it and find a messenger is looking for the duo and wanting
them to accept an invention to Spooky Island. Of course both of them
are reluctant to go to any place with that name. But when they find out
they will have all they can eat they quickly agree. Upon arriving at
the airport Fred and Velma meet up to each ones surprise and then they
see Daphne and Shaggy and it all makes sense. Each one of them was
invited by the same person a Mr. Mondavarious. Scooby suddenly shows up
wearing a old woman's hat and dress and walking on his hind legs, due
to the fact that they wouldn't let big dogs into the airplane so it was
the only way to get him on.
They all board the plane and get comfortable as we next see them flying
high in the skies on Spooky Airlines. Shaggy is about to dig into a
huge hero when he sees a blond haired girl walking down the airplane
aisle and he is entranced just by the sight of her. She sits down next
to Scooby and starts to sneeze due to her alleges do dogs. Shaggy tells
him to move to the back and sit by Fred and Velma which he agrees to.
The girl introduces herself as Mary Jane and offers Shaggy a Scooby
Snax much to his surprise. Scooby meanwhile sees a white cat in the
next seat and can't help but to bark at it. Fred flicks Scooby's nose
thinking it will get him to stop only for Scooby to punch Fred and
chase after the cat.
The plane lands on Spooky Island and are met up by Mr. Mondavarious. He
walks with them along telling them that what led them there is not him
offering them a ticket but their need for a mystery. He explains to
them that there is something wrong with Spooky Island. The college kids
all arrive ready to party and as wild teenagers but when they go to
depart from the island they are well behaved and organized. He believes
a magic spell is at work to have caused this behavior. All of the
Mystery Inc members say they will solve it before the others do and
storm off much to the delight of Mr. Mondavarious.
At the bar Scooby gets a phone call from an unknown stranger telling
him to come to the forest for a bag of hamburgers. He agrees and walks
off. Shaggy meanwhile wins a prize for Mary Jane in a coin operated
crane game giving her his winnings. Velma meanwhile witnesses some
ritual that is supposed to scare off tourist but she figures out it is
just some holographic lamps producing the effects. Daphne bothers
someone performing a voodoo ritual on a dead chicken , asking him for
info on the weird things going on. He tells her to go home and not to
go into the haunted castle no matter what. Of course thinking it was
meant so she would do the opposite she heads to the castle.
Scooby reaches the sac of Hamburgers hanging on a tree and goes for
them only to be met by a 7 foot monster who tries to capture him.
Scooby gets rid of him by climbing up a tree which the monster can't
make it all the way up of and gets flicked off of it by weighing to
much. The monster goes flying into the air landing on a roller coaster.
Shaggy and Mary continue to walk together only to be broken up by
Scooby screaming about monsters. Mary decides to leave while Daphne
asks for Shaggy and Scooby's help suddenly.
All three of them head into the castle, even though Scooby and Shaggy
have second thoughts about it. Much to their surprise Fred and Velma
are there as well also investigating the castle. Fred splits the
team up and goes off with Velma sending Daphne the other way and
Shaggy and Scooby another. A little person sees Fred and Velma walking
by and turns a switch on turning the thought to be closed down ride
that inhabits the castle on. Shaggy and Scooby get pinned to the wall
by plastic sausages wrapping around them, Daphne gets flung onto a
moving cart and Fred and Velma get backed towards bookcases by swinging
blades. Velma tosses a book to Fred and he holds it up protecting
himself from the blade that sends him flying through a window into the
operating room shutting the ride down as he lands on the switch upon
impact. Fred and Velma walk into what looks like a classroom and turn
on a video that seems to be a brainwashing device to teach college
students how to act. The little person who tries to trap them in the
first place sets off an alarm sending in all the minions to get Mystery
Inc. They sneak out wearing castle disguises and have a few clues along
with them including some pyramid shaped device.
Velma starts to investigate the pyramid looking clue while N' Goo
Tuana, the man who tried to scare Velma earlier watches nearby at a
piano. A young male college student walks up to Velma and she starts to
tell him about the old days. How great they were. All five of them on
the road solving mysteries. It was great until an unwanted relative of
Scooby's showed his ugly head from the back seat of the van. Scrappy
Doo, Scooby's young nephew pees on Daphne's shirt while bragging about
how he will stop any ghost that gets in his way. Fred tells him to pipe
down and Scrappy starts to tell them off. They decide to dump Scrappy
off on the road and drive off leaving him there. Velma and the young
male continue to laugh about the story she told of Scrappy as the music
comes to an end on the piano. Scooby looks out the window to see the
same monster that chased him before and freaks out ducking under a
table. Fred tries to put a calm to the situation by insisting there is
no such thing as monsters only for the same monster to jump through the
window and scare everyone. The monsters knock Fred and Velma out with
their monster breath while Daphne gets the pyramid back just in time
before N'Goo Tuana can. Daphne, Mary, Shaggy and Scooby escape just in
time hiding in vases and come up with a plan.
They split up again to go look for Fred and Velma or any clues they can
find. Shaggy and Scooby find Fred but he has been hypnotized and starts
to chase them along with all the other people on the beach. Daphne
meanwhile has the pyramid taken from her by a masked wrestler. Scooby
and Shaggy find some motorbikes and use them to escape meeting up with
Mary Jane who hops onto Shaggy's motorbike. Scooby then notices that
Mary's eyes are possessed for a moment and as they hop off the bikes
Scooby barks at her madly. Scooby and Shaggy get into an argument as
Shaggy doesn't believe him that she is possessed. As they start
to fight Scooby falls through a trap door and Shaggy jumps in after him
to save him.
Shaggy finds a pool with protoplasmic entities in it. He reaches in and
grabs Velma's head and she tells him to release it which he does. It
goes flying into the air and heads back to her body revealing a monster
that was inside of her body. Once the day light hits the monsters body
it evaporates in mid air. Shaggy reaches in and finds Fred's head
next releasing it and does the same for Daphne sending them all
back towards their bodies. They all leave the forest with Shaggy having
the pyramid back in their possession and see the voodoo man on the
beach. He warns them that they are about to do a ritual using Scooby
for a sacrifice as they need a good soul and he fits the bill for that.
If they finish the ritual the creatures will take over for the next
10,000 years.
Scooby winds up in the office of Emile Mondavarious where he starts
to talk to Scooby, telling him how much they love Scooby unlike Shaggy
who wouldn't even believe him about Mary Jane being possessed. He tells
him he wants him to be a sacrifice leaving Scooby speechless. Back on
the beach Mystery Inc talks about what is going on. They decide to
rescue Scooby and go into action. They sneak into a ritual trying to
fit in as if they belong. The possessed bring in Scooby to be
sacrificed
, they take his protoplasmic soul and put it into a rod attached to
the pyramid. Mr. Mondavarious goes to absorb all of the energy from the
pool of protoplasm. Needing Scooby's to complete it, Shaggy quickly
jumps in and knocks him down before he can take Scooby's spirit. His
spirit winds up back into his body as they go to pull a mask off of
Mondavarious seeing its just a robot. Scrappy Doo shows himself through
the inside of the robot already having absorbed the energy he starts to
grow stronger.
Gaining muscles and mass Scrappy grows into a monstrous giant as he
orders his minions to get Mystery Inc as he still needs Scooby to
finish his spell. Each member fights off different people trying to
stop Scrappy. Daphne fights the wrestler outside while Fred and Velma
deal with the army of minions. Scooby and Shaggy run from the giant
Scrappy heading into a cavern where Mary Jane is already waiting for
them. Mary Jane knocks Shaggy out with her monster breath and Scrappy
takes hold of Scooby roaring in his face. Daphne beats up the wrestler
sending him crashing down over the pool of spirits sending them back
into their proper bodies. Shaggy hits Scrappy with a metal arm device
sending all the power in him flying out as Scrappy shrinks back down in
size. Scooby sends the now small Scrappy flying into the wall with a
backhand as all the spirits return to their proper bodies.
The news crews show up again to ask Fred how he solved the case. Fred
is about to go into a story before stopping short and saying he wants
Velma to tell everyone about it. Scrappy meanwhile has some choice
parting words for them as his is carted off . Mystery Inc is back
together and vows to stop all evil no matter where it is.

REVIEW OF
MOVIE: I wasn't a big
fan of the movie I must admit. This may do with the fact that I never
liked the cartoon. I found the situation to be silly and predictable
every time and at least this movie did try and change the formula up a
bit. By adding some disagreement amongst them and taking away the
monsters with the masks to pull off, it did try to make an enjoyable
movie.
The story sets
things up nicely, showing them on a typical Scooby Doo situation with
them chasing some phony monster in some factory only to find out it was
a fake as always. Fred is made out to be some egotistical blow hard and
the team breaks up only to get back together two years later. The
situation is all right for a story set up but seemed a little out of
character to me. Some things seemed a little stretched like the
fact that Scrappy Doo was behind it the whole time wearing some robot
disguise and was able to have monster minions work for him. It
was just another case of pulling things out of nowhere to make a story
work that wouldn't have otherwise. But they did have the right
idea here. It's no secret, but most people truly disliked the Scrappy
Doo character on the cartoon series. He was annoying, useless and your
typical Hanna Barberra character that could only ruin a show in both
quality and enjoyment. This movie at least tried to play on the fact
that overall most have this character and it was a great chance to turn
him into the main villain here.
The special
effects were pretty good but not perfect as you would see in other
movies with a similar budget. It was still quite impressive to see how
well they pulled off a computer animated dog interacting with all these
actors and having Scooby moving things about as if he was really there.
He looked as real as you would expect a computer generated dog to look.
But it was far from totally realistic looking. At points it was
distracting at how fake it looked but at other points it was impressive
at the things they had him do. The monsters that were in the
movie all looked the same so that was disappointing. I guess it's
easier
to just make one computer animated model then make 10 different ones.
They did look cool for what they were but the whole sunlight destroys
them thing was nothing that creative and still left a lot of plot holes
in the whole story and purpose of the monsters and Scrappy's plans and
how this all came to be. Scrappy as a giant could have been animated
better. He looked very phony at some points and not to bad in some
close up moments. Seems like they had a problem with making it look
right due to the size he became.
Scrappy Doo as
a giant was interesting. He became power hungry and very muscular. It
was weird seeing Scrappy Doo like that as the character was really
never put into any cool situations like this in the cartoon. Most of
the time he was an attempt at causing trouble or having no fear. They
probably missed a few opportunities for Scooby and Scrappy to interact.
There was no real moments between the two besides Scrappy holding
Scooby as Scooby calls him a bad puppy only for Scrappy to roar at him
and later sneeze over him. Again not the greatest of uses for the two
together and we learn nothing of the history of the two other then the
gang got rid of him due to his being annoying. It's too bad Scrappy
stayed trapped inside of an underground cavern though as he didn't get
to do much but push people out of the way and grip others in huge
fists. Still it was kinda cool to see and a nice idea for a fun ending
to an ok film.
The situations
would have been more enjoyable if they didn't rely on cheap humor.
These would be fart jokes and drug references that filled the
movie. I suppose the movie was meant for a teenager crowd rather
then someone older but to me that's not what Scooby Doo and Shaggy were
about. It was about the varying personalities that each character had
and the interactment they had and the parts they had in solving the
mystery every given week. Here we had situations like playing with
stereotypical thoughts we have of each character (Daphne is a helpless
pretty girl, Fred a stuck up show off, Velma a nerd, Shaggy a
hungry coward..etc) The story needed work as things flew in from
everywhere. We had voodoo men and wrestlers and henchmen just all out
of no where and who's involvement in the situation may still leave you
wondering what is going on. It had the right idea and had some
good elements but seems to need a few more drafts of rewriting on the
scripts before it should have been finalized. They could have had
something great here but was missing that extra something to really
make a successful cartoon to live action movie. It's been done
successfully before, just look at Spiderman to see how it can be done.
I
just am not a big Scooby Doo fan and this didn't help me to become one
any time soon. It should have been better and it was an interesting
idea, but besides the fun moments with a super sized muscular Scrappy
Doo, it leaves a lot to be desired. It gets an big A for effort
but not to much on creativity and originality as far as jokes and
situations went. The whole spirit thing was freaky at best and a lot of
moments were not funny as they wanted to be.
If you always wanted to see
what Scooby and the gang would look like if they were real life people
well then check it out and see what you think. If you couldn't care
less and just like to see monsters and big things, just fast forward to
the end and enjoy and turn it off after words.
RATING: C-
MEMORABLE QUOTES AND MOMENTS
IN MOVIE:
(A messenger almost
falls over as Shaggy and Scooby open the doors to the Mystery Machine)
Shaggy:
"We would love to help you out, it's just we're not detectives anymore."
Messenger: "Oh no. I've been
sent by my employer, Mr. Emile Mondavarious, who invites you
to his world famous amusement park. "Spooky Island."
Shaggy: "We don't go near any
place with spooky, haunted, forbidden, or creepy in the name."
Scooby: "Ror Rydrocholric!"
Shaggy: "Right! Or
Hydrochorlonic. But that's for a whole different reason man."

Scrappy Doo: "Sure there are,
and when I find them I'll give them a good dose of puppy power "
(Scrappy suddenly pees on Daphne's shirt)

FINAL NOTES:
*Frank Welker actually has a part in this movie. He was the original
voice of Fred in the Scooby Doo cartoon and provided some of the voices
for one the monsters in this movie.
*Scrappy was made to be an adult
dog trapped in a puppies body in this movie. Which is meant to be a
joke but there is no way to really prove if this is true or not as it
was never stated in the cartoon as to who the parents were or how old
Scrappy was. I don't think he was an adult in the cartoon mind you but
it may explain some of his issues if anything.
*This movie would go on to be a
modest hit making over $150 million dollars. There would be a sequel
that wouldn't do as well but still made over $80. The sequel though had
no macro moments but did have lots of monsters from past episodes of
the cartoon series.
Errors--
Factual -- There
is no reason why Velma's theory about each spirit switching with one
another when She, Fred, Shaggy and Daphne are standing around one
another with Fred and Daphne having the wrong spirit, should
have worked. For one thing Shaggy's spirit never was taken from him so
his spirit shouldn't have switched at all.
Continuity -- The clothing that some of the
characters wear are different in a few moments. One moment Daphne is
wearing tennis shoes while running up a stairwell the next she has
boots on and then the shoes again. The voodoo man on the beach in one
moment has no shoes on the next he did and then he doesn't again.
Special Effects -- There are many times when
the computer generated Scooby's actions don't match up with the actors
he is supposed to be interacting with. When Scooby punches Fred on the
airplane , Fred moves before the animated punch hits him. When Scooby
licks Shaggy at the end , He falls before Scooby touches him and the
licking of his face looks out of sync as well.
+ :Good effort overall. Lots of jokes
at Scrappy Doo's expense. Characters play their parts as if they were
right from the cartoon. Lots of hidden jokes and references and
an overall good attempt at emulating a Scooby Doo situation.
-
Some of the special effects did need work. While
the monsters and Scooby looked good, Scrappy as a giant looked poorly
done in comparison. Not the best of movies overall and can be corny at
times. Lots of drug and fart jokes make up a big portion of the film
going for cheap laughs over creative humor moments. May be unwatchable
if you aren't a fan of the Scooby Doo cartoon or expect something
better then what it was.
